Days that felt months long passed, one after another with no end in sight. The engines were so weakened without the help of the Mala that the impulse speeds were the best they could manage. At this speed, it was going to take at least six weeks to get to the space station where Liz and Sang were going to have to pull off some real magic space wizard stuff if they were getting out of there alive. She didn’t have the first clue how she was going to manage that, but then again there was something much more pressing she had to deal with.

Sang wouldn’t talk to her outside of pure business. Not that she could blame him, but he had been slightly less interested in her company ever since he walked straight in on her being Shanghaied by the Admiral of the Alliance. Liz really had no idea how any of that had happened, but nothing could change the fact that it had, in fact, happened, and she had to deal with the fallout.

“Sang?” she asked after flipping the coms console on. She wasn’t really expecting him to be conversational, but there was something that needed his attention.

“Is there a problem with the warp drive?”

“You mean past the Mala refusing to do anything? That’s kind of a problem.” Liz said.

Sang cleared his throat. “Not one we can fix, I don’t think. At least, not without doing some real miracle work on the broken cylinder. I don’t suppose you can talk to them again?”

“Tried,” Liz said with a decided downcast in her voice. These days there wasn’t much in her except the darkness that settled in when Sang checked out. “Anyway, are you sure you even want me to? Remember what blew the ship up in the first place, right?”

Sang let out a long, trailing sigh. His patience had long since worn out, but he managed to not get angry, outwardly anyhow. Liz thought that as long as he kept his emotions bottled up, he couldn’t invest too heavily in her. Even if what he showed was rage, it was something—some kind of vulnerability—that he wasn’t willing to show. Anything would be too much commitment if he wasn’t sure what was going on. Every fiber of Liz’s being yearned to grab the Admiral by the throat and squeeze until his eyes bugged out a little, and his lips were on the verge of turning purple. She wouldn’t kill him...but she’d get damn close.

“What’s on your mind?” Sang finally asked. “We can’t just stay away from each other for the rest of eternity. Not after what we went through in the first place.”

“Shouldn’t I be asking you that question?” Liz came back. “I’m the one who may or may not be setting you up to get sold on an intergalactic slave market...or whatever it is you think I’m doing.”

Her attempt at a joke was met with a half-hearted, disinterested chuckle. “I don’t know what I think,” he finally said. “It
